Increased Concern with Roundup Sales and Exposure
Pam Newcombe

There is increased concern with Roundup sales and exposure…people and Bayer are taking action. Below, we have referenced two articles from this Spring: “Bayer may halt U.S. Roundup sales without legal protections” and “Bayer hit with $2 billion Roundup verdict in US state of Georgia cancer case”.

Bayer Seeking Legal Protections

Bayer has informed U.S. lawmakers that it may cease sales of its Roundup weedkiller in the United States unless stronger legal protections are implemented to shield the company from ongoing product liability lawsuits. The German company has already paid about $10 billion to settle claims alleging that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, causes cancer, and faces approximately 67,000 additional pending cases, with $5.9 billion set aside for legal provisions.

Bayer argues that plaintiffs should not be allowed to sue under state laws, given that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other global regulators have deemed glyphosate safe for use. The company is exploring all possible options to resolve the litigation and has disclosed that glyphosate generated €2.6 billion ($2.8 billion) in U.S. agricultural revenue last year.

Bayer, is the only glyphosate producer in the United States and has indicated that without regulatory clarity, it may be forced to discontinue the sale of the product in the U.S.

Plaintiff Alleges Roundup Caused His Cancer

In March 2025, a Georgia jury ordered Bayer to pay approximately $2.1 billion to a plaintiff who alleged that the company’s Roundup weed killer caused his cancer. The verdict includes $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages, marking one of the largest awards in Roundup-related litigation. Bayer, which acquired Roundup through its $63 billion purchase of Monsanto in 2018, plans to appeal the decision, arguing that it contradicts scientific evidence and regulatory assessments worldwide.
