Early Summer Turf Care Tips – Part 2

Advanced Practices for Weed, Pest, and Equipment Management

Following Part 1, welcome back for Part 2 of our Early Summer Turf Care Series. These next five tips are essential for proactive landscapers and groundskeepers looking to improve turf performance and customer satisfaction all summer long.

5. 🌿 Weed Scouting & Management

Early summer is when crabgrass and other weeds start popping up. Stay vigilant by scouting pressure areas regularly.

When weeds do emerge, pull manually when feasible and educate your client on why the weed appeared (compaction, mowing height, fertility gaps, etc.). Prevention starts with cultural understanding.

6. 🛠 Repair Trouble Spots Before the Heat Hits

Summer is no time for major lawn repairs. Get ahead now:

  • On athletic fields, fix goal mouths or faceoff areas.
  • On home lawns, identify and level low or high-traffic areas.

Keep a pre-mixed seed blend (60/40 loam/compost) in a bulk bin on your trailer for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

7. 🦟 Organic Pest Management

Organic pest control is a valuable add-on that keeps clients happy and your team productive.

  • Use Mosquito Cure monthly to reduce bites.
  • Apply cedar oil to repel ticks.
  • Watch for chinch bugs, which cause wilting during peak season.

You can combine these products into one application for efficient coverage.

8. 🔧 Maintain Mowers & Tools

Summer mowing puts heavy demands on your equipment. Use rainy days to:

  • Sharpen or swap mower blades
  • Re-spool trimmer lines
  • Check and clean filters, spark plugs, and decks

Well-maintained equipment keeps your team efficient and your lawns looking clean.
