10 Essential Late-Fall Turf Tips for Healthier Lawns
Fred Newcombe

Introduction

Fall is here, and now is the time to wrap up the landscaping season well. These 10 late-fall turf tips will help you finish strong and set your lawn up for a healthy winter and a vibrant spring.

1. Apply your final fertilizer or soil amendment

If you’re nearing your last application of the season, you’re in the right window. A fall fertilization strengthens leaf blades, supports a healthier root system, and feeds the soil biome. Try our PJC Boost+S3 for your last application. This product was designed specially for fall, as chelated iron helps ‘harden’ off turf before the winter. The added BOOST comes from the gypsum and humates, which improve soil structure and add soil nutrients!

2. Seed before the window closes

Your chance to overseed is narrowing. Choose a seed blend high in perennial ryegrass (or other appropriate varieties) that establishes quickly before cold weather sets in. Check out our deeper dive on fall seeding for specifics and timing in our blog “Grass Seed for Fall“.

3. Repair and re-grade problem areas

Uneven surfaces are safety concerns and can become bigger issues if ignored. Whether from field traffic, weather, or water — damaged areas require top-dressing, regrading and repair now…don’t wait!

4. Adjust your watering schedule

As temperatures drop, shift toward deeper, less frequent watering. Follow a cycle like “one long watering per week” and let nature’s rainfall and cooler temps do the rest.

5. Mulch your leaves

Rather than raking and bagging (which removes nutrients), mow slowly with the deck set high, chop leaves finely, and let them return to the soil. Your soil biology will benefit.

6. Lower your mowing height

As winter nears, gradually reduce mowing height. If you’ve been mowing at roughly 3¼″, consider lowering to around 2½″ for the last couple of cuts once the leaves are off the trees.

7. Perform your irrigation system blow-out

Your irrigation system is a major investment and needs to be winter-proofed. Complete any repairs or adjustments, then fully blow out the system before the soil freezes.

8. Use winter turf blankets where needed

For high-traffic zones (sports fields, goal mouths, etc.) winter turf blankets can protect turf, speed spring green-up, and reduce wear. Consider them a strategic investment. Read more about the benefits in our last blog.

9. Consider dormant seeding

If you have extra seed, now’s the time. Dormant seeding (when soil and air are thoroughly cold) avoids early germination and gets seed in place ahead of spring. In many regions, the optimal window for dormant seeding and aeration is between Thanksgiving and Christmas

10. Take a well-deserved rest

Landscaping is hard work, so take a moment to recharge. A refreshed mind and body will set you up for another successful season ahead.
